Table Mountain. The most famous natural landmark in shipping history. Ascending via the Rotair cable car. Having a 360degree view as the car's floor slowly revolves. On a clear day, visibility is forever. On a cloudy or misty day, the drama of being at over 1060 meters becomes real. Our guide will tell the stories, highlight the view and talk about the magnificent flora that makes Table Mountain a world heritage site.
Through Camp's Bay and past the majestic 12 Apostles to Hout Bay. The cold Atlantic Ocean to the one side. The ancient granite and sandstone boulders and diverse flora to the other. Hout Bay, or translated, the Wood Bay was a logging area once many years ago but is now a popular residential and fishing community. The terrible after-effects of apartheid still very much in evidence.
Connecting Hout Bay to the south is the Majestic Chapman's Peak Drive. Built by convicts, the drive features fantastic views from 200 metre high cliffs. Chapman's Peak Drive is rated as one of the worlds most scenic.
And then we reach the Cape of Good Hope. Once called " the fairest Cape in the whole circumference of the globe" by Sir Francis Drake, it was also the historic meeting divide of the mighty Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Just next door, Cape Point offers unparalleled views from some of the highest sea cliffs in the world. The historic lighthouse is perched at 250 metres above the sea level and is well worth getting to for the view.
We pass the naval base of Simon's Town as we continue along the Indian Ocean, en route to see the Jackass Penguin Colony. We head back to town after we visit Boulders Beach.
