 The feathery residents of Boulders Beach have been attracting visitors from around the world, for decade. And it is no wonder why. Penguins in Africa sounds like it should be a hoax. The journey before the destination We drive along the coast towards Simon’s Town, the scenery is spectacular and the sense of wonder fills the air as we pass by. Our destination is about an hours’ drive, with a stop in Kalk Bay to stretch those legs. Our tour drivers prefer the oceanic view, as this is the best route for a coastal experience.  We have arrived! We arrive at the beach and the excitement fills the air. Follow the boardwalk through the shrubby vegetation and see who will spot the first penguin of the day. Expect to see these amazing animals up close and personal. The African penguin was initially named the Jackass penguin. It got this name because of its call. It’s a lovely loud sound that closely resembles a donkey braying. Please note that you should not touch or irritate the penguins, as their beaks are sharp and they are still wild animals. The beach The beach itself is secluded and hosts visitors from all over the world. The beach has calm waters and is known as an excellent spot to cool down when the South African summer sun shines onto your skin. Please make sure your sunscreen is packed, your skin is delicate and should be protected from the sun rays. Even South Africans can still walk away from a day at the beach with sun burn or sun stroke. Cloudy days can be especially dangerous for sun stroke, so please lather up no matter what the weather looks like.  Just before we go
Take in your fill of time with the penguins. These quirky animals may be slow on the beach, but they sure can propel through the water at quite a speed.  Before we arrive Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is a little slice of natural paradise that lies at the heart of Cape Town’s southern suburbs. Bo-Kaap The BO-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most distinct neighborhoods and there’s so much to see, taste and explore. Your personal tour will take you into the heart of the BO-Kaap, for an up close and personal experience on what it is to be a Cape Malays. So why the brightly painted houses? As a matter of fact, the houses being painted a bright color represents their freedom the residents gained after the end of Apartheid, as they were forced into a designated section far from the ‘white residents’. The Bo-Kaap residents have been around since the 1760’s, after generations, it’s still remarked as a cultural spot that cannot be showcased in a single image. We take the streets into an area known as the Company gardens. Company Gardens  This beautiful oasis is right in the centre of Cape Town and is known as the breath of fresh air for the locals. The Company’s Garden was first built as a refreshment station for the trade route that rounded the tip of Africa between Europe and the east. Ships sent by the Dutch East India Company would stop by after months at sea and stock up on fresh produce grown in the garden—hence, “The Company’s Garden”. The garden showcases fauna and flora, as the brown squirrel rules the roost. The Garden is also home to the South African Museum and the Cape Town Holocaust Centre here, where you can view exhibits about the atrocities suffered by Jews during World War II. Beyond that, there are dozens of little historical treasures you’d easily miss if you weren’t looking for them. There is the Rutherford Fountain—which still stands on the original spot where it was erected in 1864—and the well pump embedded in an oak tree which dates back to 1842. There’s also the oldest cultivated tree in South Africa—a saffron pear, propped up on huge steel crutches. The garden has much more to offer, you just need to take a closer look at the surprises waiting around each corner. Now for the next leg of our journey, a VIP Robben Island experience  The V&A Waterfront This is our departure point to the world famous Robben Island, where the man himself, Nelson Mandela was an inmate at the correctional facility. The V&A Waterfront is a destination by itself, as it showcases different aspects of the Cape Town lifestyle. We depart from the V&A Harbour on our private ferry, onward to Robben Island.  Personal Robben Island Experience As we board the Ferry, the experience begins. The ferries were used to transport staff and political prisoners between the mainland and Robben Island. The sights and experiences along the way to Robben Island cannot be captured in a single photograph. We disembark at Murray’s Bay Harbour situated on the east coast of the Island. The island’s itself first recorded landing was in 1498 when a group of Portuguese sailors took refuge there and stayed overnight in a cave. Our tour takes us into the cell of Nelson Mandela. He spend 18 years out of the 27 years he was sentenced to in that very cell. Today, it is seen as a monument and a symbol for freedom in South Africa.  After an adventure filled day, we head back home. Reminiscing on the memories and unique experience we had, you can without a doubt say your experience was like no other.
 Apartheid to this day lingers in the mind’s of the South African people, as there are still traces of this moment in history in the locals. Our Personal Tour I believe that experiences should be personal. Apartheid Apartheid is an Afrikaans word which means separateness, and that is exactly what took place. Different races were separated according to their skin color and placed into settlements. The white minority were considered superior. Anyone perceived as ‘non-white’ were allowed to make use of designated areas. These individuals were excluded from ‘whites only’ locations which were indicated by a sign. When it came to voting, it was a white privilege to vote. Voting rights were denied to Coloureds in the same way that they were denied to Blacks from 1950 to 1983.  Apartheid is a story with twists and turns throughout, It was a tragic time in the South African history and to this day, the aftermath is seen across the nation. Apartheid ended in 1994 and South Africa has turned over a new page and as you will see, the rainbow nation is alive and well. Nelson Mandela had the biggest influence on the outcome of Apartheid and its demise. Nelson Mandela’s Footsteps Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Nelson Mandela spent nearly seven decades of his life in the struggle against white minority rule and for a free and democratic non-racial society.  On 12 June 1964,Nelson Mandela was accused of treason and sentenced to life in prison. On 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison after more than 27 years behind bars. He continued to call for peace throughout violent protests and crowd gatherings. One of the most iconic moments in history was the Mandela’s first vote casted in 1994 and the iconic moment when he presented the trophy to the Springbok captain, Francios Pienaar in 1995 when the Springboks won the World Cup.  Mandela retired from active political life in June 1999 after his first term of office as president. He received the World Methodist Peace Award in 2000 and many others till his death in 2013.
Nelson Mandela has been proclaimed as the father of the new nation, he dedicated his life to correcting the wrong of the past and his legacy lives on to this day. His message of peace and unification lives on and has made a significant impact on each South African. We all want to go up the cable car. It's on our bucket list. We drive to the lower cableway station, we battle to find parking and walk to the building. At the station, we wonder what all those people are doing standing around and waiting for. Then it hits us. They are waiting in the queue. One hour, two hours or even three hours waiting time is possible. Summertime and school holidays. Tourists and locals alike are going to push those queues to longer lengths.  Here is my list of do's and to beat the queue at the Table Mountain Cableway: Plan ahead!- Buy tickets online ahead of time at www.webtickets.co.za. If you leave the buying of tickets to the Cableway Station, you will be hit by a double queue. One for the ticket office and one for boarding the cable car. - Buy Early Access Tickets. The Early Access tickets are more expensive than the regular fares. The Early Access tickets give you the opportunity to go up a half an hour earlier than the general opening time which is 08h00. A half an hour before the masses. These tickets are only available for Dec and Jan. Also unlike the regular tickets, they are just valid for 2 days. If you don't use them make sure to ask for a refund within the two days. Standard tickets are valid for seven days. - Check the weather forecasts. Do not assume that table Mountain Cableway operates every day. The cableway is very weather dependent. Plan for a good day. Make sure the wind will not be a factor. I use Windguru and Accuweather . This is not a failsafe plan but increases your chances of the cableway running. - For visitors to Cape Town, consider doing this activity at the very first opportunity. This will give you some flexibility during your stay to try again should the weather not be good at first.  On the Day!- Recheck the weather. The weather should ideally be clear with low wind. - Go early. During summer, the cableway opens at 08h00. Unless you have Early Access Tickets which allow you up between 07h30 and 08h00. In winter the opening times are 08h30. Please check the www.tablemountain.net for correct times. If you have regular tickets, the summer holiday queue can begin at 07h00. In the school holidays, the line can be at 2 hours by 08h00. - Bring your camera, hat, walking shoes, sunscreen and something warm to wear. It is not unusual for there to be a different temperature at the top of the mountain. Bring some money, There are a gift shop and a food shop at the top. - Enjoy your visit. Walk, eat and drink something. Take lots of photos. But please do not pick flowers, feed the animals or take rocks home as souvenirs. Smoking is only allowed at one area on Table Mountain. That is at the Twelve Apostle Terrace below the shop. Please leave your drone at home. Drones are not allowed in the Nation Park  Other Tips!- Table Mountain has a fabulous website. www.tablemountain.net. On this site, you will find holiday specials(mostly for SA citizens) and cableway details. Some of the specials include seniors discount (SA), birthday special (SA), students discount and sundowner special (SA) - There are free guided tours every hour on the hour. Starting at 09h00 until the last one at 15h00. The tours are 30 minutes. The tours leave from the 12 Apostle Terrace, below the Cafe. Learn about the stories, the myths and the facts. Please tip the tour guide. Guided tours can really enhance the experience. - There are free MyCiti shuttle buses from the parking area as you turn into Lower Tafelberg Road. This is the road that takes you to the cableway station. Shuttles depart every 20 minutes, between 07h00 and 19h00. - There is free WI-Fi at both the Upper and Lower Cableway buildings. At the top, go to the Wi-Fi Lounge. Here you can plug in, upload and grab a bite to eat. - For the kids, make sure to get the activity book. These books are handed out at the Lower Station. In the book are fun activities and a treasure hunt map. - The Table Mountain Cableway audio tour is available free via the VoiceMap app. This audio tour can be downloaded from the Apple store or Google Play. The audio tour is run offline, and so you will not use up your mobile data. The audio tour provides entertainment while waiting in the queue and gives you the facts at your own time as you wander around the top.flora and fauna - Besides and functions that you may wish to arrange on the Mountain, Table Mountain Cableway has introduced a High Tea as well as a Sundowner Package. Both of which take place in the Wi-Fi Lounge. I advise you to be wary of arranging functions on top of Table Mountain. The weather in Cape Town and notably Table Mountain can be fickle. Make sure you have a plan B! Other popular events at the Gardens are the Summer Outdoor Concerts, the winter concerts, outdoor movie nights and some gorgeous picnic spots. You do not want to get all the way there and be told that tickets are sold out or that accommodation is fully booked. Plan. Create a list of all the attractions you want to see but make sure you’re not trying to do too much with too little time. If you try cramming it all in one trip, you are more likely to remember the stress of planning it all than actually enjoying your vacation. A few must-see attractions in Cape Town include Cape Point, Table Mountain, Robben Island and Boulders Beach. Check out the weather and pack accordingly. You may be wondering how Cape Town got its name? Well as far as we know the story started in 1488 and was originally named the Cape of Storms by Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias. It was later renamed to the Cape of Good Hope because of the great optimism created by the opening of a sea route to the East. Over the course of time, it has now become known as our beloved Cape Town. An alternative title, the Mother City, is an affectionate nickname that is widely used among locals and visitors to Cape Town alike.  What to Expect The city is famous for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape Floral Region, and for its remarkable landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point. We know that when you choose Cape Town as your travel destination, things like ‘Will there be enough time to do it all?’ or ‘How will we know which landmarks to visit?’ all come into play.
